Artificial Intelligence Use

It is at the discretion of each instructor in the Department of Anthropology whether they adopt the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their courses, utilize them for certain assignments, or do not incorporate them at all. We advise students to refer to the course syllabus or speak with their instructors for clarification on the permissible uses of AI in each course. The misuse of AI tools, which includes unethical technology use and use that violates instructors鈥 course policies, is considered a violation of the 911吃瓜爆料免费观看入口 policy on Academic Integrity.  

Academic Integrity  
Per the 911吃瓜爆料免费观看入口 policy on Academic Integrity, cheating includes copying, plagiarism, and the unauthorized use of online tools or services.  

Misuses of AI tools that constitute cheating include: 

  • Copying text from a generative AI tool.  
  • Using AI tools to generate content for assignments or exams without explicit authorization from the instructor. 
  • Submitting content generated by an AI tool as solely your own work, including content altered by AI or digital paraphrasing tools without proper citation.  

Misuses of AI tools that constitute plagiarism include: 

  • Copying content generated by an AI tool without the use of quotation marks and citations attributing the words to their source.  
  • Unauthorized use of AI-generated content, or use of AI-generated content, whether in whole or in part, even when paraphrased, without citing the AI as the source.  

Misuses of AI tools that violate the AAA Principles of Professional Responsibility include: 

  • Uploading interview, observational, and other data into AI tools without explicit permission from interlocutors (鈥淒o No Harm,鈥 鈥淏e Open and Honest Regarding Your Work,鈥 鈥淥btain Informed Consent and Necessary Permissions,鈥 鈥淧rotect and Preserve Your Records鈥). 
  • Solely relying on AI tools for anthropological data analysis (鈥淒o No Harm,鈥 鈥淏e Open and Honest Regarding Your Work鈥). 

Appropriate Uses 
AI tools should not be used without explicit approval from a course instructor.  

If the use of AI is permitted for an assignment, students must: 

  • disclose the use of AI, including the tools that were used, the specific purposes they were used for, and how the resulting content was personally reviewed and verified; 
  • transparently cite any ideas and syntax that they did not create themselves, including AI generated content; and 
  • only use AI as a collaborative tool, not as a sole source of academic creation. 

Alternative Assignments 

As a Department, we recognize that  

  • AI tools were created and trained through the unethical and uncompensated expropriation of creative works from artists and authors;  
  • the labor involved in training and maintaining AI tools is intensifying inequities between the Global North and South; 
  • AI tools frequently reproduce racial, gender, and Euro-centric stereotypes and often marginalize or misrepresent more subtle forms of local, cultural knowledge; and that 
  • AI tools are a vector for environmental injustice and accelerating climate change.  

Therefore, as a Department, we support students who choose not to use AI tools and advise instructors to provide alternative assignments for any coursework that requires the use of AI.
