Research Interests

Dr. Manke has over twenty years of experience leading student success programs 911³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏÃâ·Ñ¹Û¿´Èë¿Ú. As a campus administrator (i.e., Associate Dean of CLA, Interim Associate Vice President for High-Impact Practices) and Professor, Dr. Manke spearheaded several institution-wide initiatives to promote equitable access to and participation in high-impact practices, including internships and service-learning. These efforts entailed building bridges between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, creating institutional infrastructures, and giving voice to our most important stakeholders—students.  Much of Dr. Manke’s current scholarly work challenges the characterization of internships as uniformly positive and explicitly investigates challenges to securing and completing internships, especially for first generation, low-income students of color—students who have historically been excluded from internship opportunities.  Current projects include:

• A book under contract with Routledge Publishing: Manke, B., Gasior, B., & Chang, M. (book forthcoming). InternsHIPs: High-Impact Practices, EDI and Provocative Praxes in Higher Education. Routledge Publishing.
• Evaluation of the Long Beach Community Internship Program, a campus-based paid internship program that targets students who grew up in Long Beach. Dr. Manke serves as the Director of the program and is using both post-internship surveys and Photovoice to examine students’ challenges to completing internships including experiences of racism and classism.
