GERN 474/574: Global Aging
GERN 474/574: Global Aging offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the demographic, health, social, economic, and ethical dimensions of population aging across the globe. The course examines global demographic trends and the factors driving population aging while introducing students to health systems, long-term care, and social protection approaches used around the world.
911³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏÃâ·Ñ¹Û¿´Èë¿Ú will explore how aging affects work, pensions, caregiving, and families and examine important ethical challenges such as ageism, resource allocation, and intergenerational equity. The course also considers the social and structural factors that contribute to inequities in aging and encourages students to develop evidence-based strategies that promote healthy and equitable aging for all.
Through a global perspective, students will compare aging experiences across high-, middle-, and low-income countries and evaluate policies, systems, and programs designed to support older adults. They will apply public health ethics and human rights frameworks to real-world challenges while strengthening critical research and analytical skills relevant to policy and professional practice.
